Custom Phenolic Plastic Parts
Our Custom Phenolic Plastic Parts are machined from a hard, thermosetting material created by impregnating a cotton fabric reinforcement with phenolic resin. The composite is then cured under high heat and pressure, resulting in a dense, laminated material with high mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and excellent electrical insulation properties. Its rigidity and durability make it a reliable material for demanding industrial use.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between paper-based and cotton-based phenolic?
Paper-based grades are primarily used for their excellent electrical properties. Cotton-based grades (like C, CE, L, LE) have a fabric reinforcement, which gives them superior mechanical strength, impact resistance, and wear resistance, making them better for mechanical parts like gears and bearings.
Is phenolic plastic brittle?
Yes, phenolic is a hard and rigid material, which also means it is more brittle than most thermoplastic materials like Nylon or Polycarbonate. It has high compressive strength but can chip or crack under sharp impact, so part design should account for this.
What is the maximum operating temperature for phenolic parts?
The continuous operating temperature depends on the grade. Generally, cotton and paper-based phenolics can operate continuously at temperatures around 125°C (255°F). Glass-based phenolic grades can handle significantly higher temperatures.
Can phenolic plastic be glued or bonded?
Due to its thermoset nature and cured surface, phenolic is very difficult to bond with common adhesives. For assembly, mechanical fastening (using screws, bolts, or press-fits) is the most reliable method.
Why choose a thermoset like phenolic over a thermoplastic like Nylon?
Choose phenolic when you need high rigidity and dimensional stability at elevated temperatures, along with excellent electrical insulating properties. Thermoplastics like Nylon are tougher and less brittle but will soften and deform at high temperatures where phenolic remains stable.
