Our Phenolic Board 18mm is a high-pressure, thermoset industrial laminate. It is manufactured by impregnating layers of cotton fabric with phenolic resin. These layers are then subjected to high heat and pressure, which initiates a chemical reaction (polymerization) that fuses them into a single, dense, and rigid sheet. This process yields a material with high mechanical durability and exceptional dimensional stability.



Performance and Applications
This board is known for its excellent electrical insulation and flame-retardant properties, often complying with UL 94 V-0 standards. Its high mechanical and electrical performance makes it ideal for fabricating insulating structural components in motors and electrical equipment, and it is stable enough for use in transformer oil. It is also specified for mechanical parts like gears, guide wheels, and saw guides where durability is critical.

How does this board's performance compare to G-10/FR-4?
G-10/FR-4 is a glass-epoxy laminate. It offers higher mechanical strength, lower moisture absorption, and superior electrical insulating properties, especially in humid conditions. Phenolic is a more cost-effective choice for general-purpose mechanical and electrical applications where the extreme performance of G-10 is not required.
What is the best way to machine phenolic board?
Phenolic should be machined with sharp carbide tooling. Due to its abrasive nature, high-speed steel (HSS) will dull quickly. It produces a fine, abrasive dust, so proper dust collection and personal protective equipment are essential during machining.
Is this material suitable for structural use as a replacement for plywood or metal?
In certain applications, yes. It is much more rigid and thermally stable than wood and offers electrical insulation that metals lack. However, it is more brittle than metal. It is an excellent choice for mounting panels, jigs, and fixtures where dimensional stability and insulation are key.
